Kadın oturmak bilmiyordu. Durmak bilmiyordu demek isterdim. Oturuyor. Ne yapabilirim?. Konuşmuyor da. Hatta tanışmıyoruz. Henüz beni görmedi. Yüzü çok güzel. Nasıl güzel? Bilmem.

1- Oda izmarit kokuyordu. 2- Kendimi berbat hissediyordum. Peki ne kadar berbat?

- Bir kere duvarları görmek iğrenç bir şey. Oturduğum yer bok gibi. Duvar kağıdı sidik gibi. Gerçi ben de sidik gibiyim. Sen beni boşver. Kıç atıyorum sana işte kimseyi gördüğüm yok ne zamandır. Makarna da sidik gibi bu arada.
- Cehenneme gerek yok yani.
- Yok yok, gerek yok Salim. Pek soru sormaz Cemil. Kafa sikmez, sıkıştırmaz ama dinler. Birkaç bira cilalarım bazen. Akşam. Hani bazı akşamlar vardır. Vardır işte. Hasatın çıkar bazen. Cemil oturur yanıma dertleşiriz, o da içer bazen. Anlayacağınız babamdan iyidir.
- Kalk bir yüzünü yıka da çıkalım. Salim maldır ama kaliteli maldır. Çıktık. Küçük, pis bir kahve. Nasıl geldik bilmiyorum. İstanbul’ u unutmuşum. Söylemedim. En son 5 yıl önce gelmiştim İstanbul’ a. O olaydan sonra bir daha gelmedim. Ne olayı? Sorma be! Yutma dolmayı sorma işte yeri gelince anlatırız onu da. Konuştuk biraz. Salim baya büyümüş. Nasıl büyümüş? Zengin olmuş işte, çok parası var, çok. Kıskandım biraz. Belki çıksaydım ben de böyle olurdum dedim kendime. Salim’ in telefonu çalıyor sürekli. Salim’ in toplantısı varmış. Bundan sonra beni aramaya çalışacakmış. Sarıldık. O an sevdim Salim’ i. İnsan olduğu için. Duvar, sehpa, bardak olmadığı için sevdim. İnsan görmezseniz, böyle olursunuz. Salim gitti. Evin önündeydim. Sanki ilk defa geliyormuş gibi. Genelde film izleyince böyle olur insan. Doğrulur ve yeniden yaşamaya başlar. Ben de doğruldum ve apartmana girdim. Duyurular, ödemeler vesaire. Salim’ le dışarı çıkarken bunların hiçbiri dikkatimi çekmemişti. Renkler mesela. Duvarlar kırmızıydı. Duvara dokunarak merdiveni çıkmaya başladım. Körler gibi. Yaşadığım yeri tanımaya çalışıyordum. Kapılara dokundum, isimleri okudum. 3. kata çıktım ve sağdaki kapıya anahtarı soktum. Zorladım. Açılmadı. Direniyordu. Kafamı kaldırdım. Aydınlandım. 4. katta oturuyordum. Yukarı çıktım ve anahtarı çevirdim. İçeri girerken aşağıdan bir ses duyuldu. Sonra bir ses daha. Anlaşılan alt kattaki iki kapıda açılmıştı. Kadın kapısının zorlandığını söylüyordu. Adam hırsız olma ihtimali üzerinde duruyordu. İstanbul bozulmuştu, polisler eskisi gibi değildi devlet bunları önlemeliydi. Yavaşça kapıyı örttüm. Hala sesleri geliyordu.

Censorship in Cinema

Considering their effects, there are some paramount tools between the means of communication . In all the arts, cinema is known as the most effective one. Goverments, who are aware of the effects of cinema, have always tried to control it.. It is well known that the biggest propoganda films have been made in Russia in the cold war period and this is not a coincidence. Thus, America ,who knows this power very well, did not let their soldiers watch the film " Walleys of the Wolves Irak". As it is known, cencorship is the state in which the films are controlled or limited by the authority. In Turkey, the adventure of the cinema started along with its best friend; censorship. Here are some of the films which are censored in Turkey: "The Street Walker( Adolf Körner 1942 )", "The Endless Road ( Duygu Sağıroğlu 1966 )", "The Bouncers ( Kayahan Arıkan 1967 )", "The Big Animosity ( Tunç Başaran 1969 )", "The Hope ( Yılmaz Güney 1970)". Many of these films were awarded in Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals but they were not shown in the country they were made in. I believe that the censorship in the motion pictures should be abolished.

Art should be free since it is the expression of feelings directly without any interference. I think the censorship in the Turkish Cinema should be abolished because it loses its charecteristic to be an art if it is censored. In Turkey, when producers, who have a good film, apply to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs for support, they put their canary among the cats. The producers, who do not make the proper changes in the films upon the expected requests of the ministry, lose the opportunity to get financial support. Moreover, even though the producers make the film with their own money, they are exposed to the limitations of the Censorship Commission. Furthermore, the censorship is easier when the producer and the director are not the same person. Since the producers financially contribute more to the film, they want to earn money in any case. So, the financial gain becomes more important and art turns into only something commercial.

Turkish Cinema does not only convert into just a trade, but it also becomes a jigsaw puzzle of the governments if the censorship is not abolished. Take, for example, the film " Revenge of the Snakes" which was banned by the Censorship Committee in 1962. The president of the period, Cemal Gürsel, who watched the preview of the film admired the film and he wanted it to be shown without any limitation. It is interestingly enough that the same film was made again by Şerif Gören in 1985 and it was censored due to the different reasons. Similarly, another film "Guardian of the Dawn", was censored because it was claimed that the film turned people against the military in the scenes of aircraft crashes. However, the commander of the airforces watched the film admiringly later and allowed it to be seen uncensored. As these two examples illustrate, men and institutions behave arbitrarily in the field of censorship and this causes the movies to be the recreational ground of the governments.

Film productions increase in the counries where there is a censorship and compulsion. So, the censorship should be abolished because it is useless and also triggers underground cinema and does not contribute to the country. People are limited to express themselves, they apply to the art inevitably. For example, Iranian Cinema showed an increase of 120 percent last year. It is interesting that the dictatorial regime in Iran made a major conribution to the its cinema.Another example is from the USA. Although the film "Fight Club" was censored in America, the film has been watched by millions of people and became one of the best films of American films history. Prohibition brings illegality. If the films are censored, films go to underground; that is, people go to underground.

Some people who are against the abolition of cinema censorship may claim that the cinema should be controlled because of moral values. However cinema is an art that is preferred so people do not have to watch it. Although shots and captions like portrayal of crime or suicide, display of dangerous weapons, overpassionate love making, nudity and indecent exposure are sometimes exaggarated in the cinema, it is the problem of people who want to watch them. It should not be a problem of goverment. Furthermore, these exaggarations can sometimes be the need of the director or the scenarist. So, they should be free since the art should not be restricted.

Cinema’s associations with youth, sexuality, and expression have often made it a target for government control. In many cases censorship violates freedom and it also causes statesmans to behave arbitrarily. Turkish government is trying to make copyright law proper for EU norms in these days. In my opinion, the government should also examine the subject of censorship in detail. It is time to look into the role that can be played by criticism, analysis, and cinema literacy rather than relying on a Censor Board that acts as a moral police. There might be a flood of grade without censorship.

It is your flesh that I wear..

No European Union , No Cry

"Progress in EU relationships", "EU members in Turkey", "tension between Turkey and the EU"... These are the sounds echoing in my dream. Is not that weird? This issue started to be in our dreams anyway. In fact, dreaming about this issue may be accepted as normal. We grew up with it after all. Still, let's sum it up a little. The roots of European Union is based on European Cool and Steel Community. This community developed in time and became one of the biggest economic and politic organizations. Turkey has struggled for joining it for about fourty years and has victoried very little on points. I believe that Turkey should not join the European Union because the EU is exploiter in economic fields, two faced in political fields, catty in military fields and cencorship in social fields.

First reason why Turkey should not join European Union is that They are exploiting us unmercifully in the economics field. As is known, Turkey is the only country that signed the Customs Union Treaty without being a member of it. Plainly, we signed it but we are not in the Resolution Committee. Thus, EU is not pumping the economic aids which The Customs Union involved in. Turkey has lost 80 billion dollars since this treaty was signed in. Since they did not fulfill their promises, Turkey lost 12,5 billion dollars in five years( 2,5 billion dollars per annum) and could not get 3.2 billion dolllars which was promised at first hand. As these economic aids did not come to our country, we toppled into two severe recessions. Another point of the damage to Turkey is the tariffes which are applied to the third world countries. Just because of this, foreign-trade deficit of Turkey doubled and it caused Turkey not to take place in an outlet which includes 250 million people. This situation costed a great deal of money,8.4 billion dollars, for public sectors.

Not only the economic issues, but also there are some other problems in the militaries field. Another reason why Turkey should not be in EU is that they are insidious when it comes to talk about military issues. First, EU believes that Turkish army, which asserts the rights of our citizens and insures the peace in Cyprus, is occupier. Second, EU claims that Turkey contravened the national borders(Iraq) and they also announced that Turkey's cross-border operations against the terrorist organization are unfair.Take, for example, opinions of Karen Fogg who is EU old represantative of Turkey: "I want to see a flag that consists of yellow, green and red against the flag of Turkey"(ın Tunceli). In summary, they do not want our country to contest against the terrorist organization. Third, if Turkey joins EU, Turkish Army will be one of the most effective member states in the European Army that will be established. Moreover, since Turkey's army will be the best considering the quality, it is a very big problem in possibility of argument in Europe. So neither should we join nor they takes us for safety.

Another reason why Turkey should not join EU is that they are two-faced in the political fields. As you know, members of EU have voting rights in proportion to their population. Merkel thinks that Turkey will never be a member of EU and explains the reason :" Turkey will never be able to catch the expected level about the woman rights, rule of law and democratic reforms." But what if we carry out them? Then their insincerity starts to come out and expressions starts to change like this : "We can not even imagine a majority of 100 Turkish members in EU Parliament" These words were uttered by Camiel Eurlings, leader of christian-democrats in Holland, before the EU progress report (24 october 2006) was established. There are different notworthy opinions In C.Eurling's draft report. In this report, it is said that not only Turkey made Armenian Genocide but also they made the Assyrian and Pontus Genocide. It is also declared that if Turkey wants to join EU it should accept these claims of genocide. Moreover, they wanted us to recognize the South Cyprus and open the harbours. After all these circumstances, they still do not guarantee the membership. First, we will acknowledge our politics of agriculture, health, economy and education. Second, We will be a commonwealth of EU. Third, We will be in EU but we will not have the right of free circulation.

My opponents may think that joining EU means act of justice, democracy and equivalence but I want to ask whether the patent of democracy is in the EU. İs the condition of being democratic really joining the EU? Is not there any democracy apart from it? Of course there is... We all know that Norway, Japan and USA are governed with democracy. Let's remember the recent events a little. "I do not go a country where the woman is scragged.". These are the words of Emmanuella Beart, French actrist, who did not join the İstanbul Film Festival for the same reason. Just three weeks after, on April 13 2005, The French police crashed the college youths protesting. The EU's media did not see this. What do you think? Is it democratic or egelitarian? When there is a right to learn kurdish language in our country, I do not think you lnow that there is a ban to talk Turkish in many European Countries. Is there anyone who does not watch the news about the woman who was washing the toilet of his son's school as a penalty since he spoke Turkish at school? I guess we all know it.

Consequently, I strongly believe that we should not join the European Union because we do not need it. Our country should just realise its power and think about improving itself without the aid of another country or institution. We all know that the EU is self-centered and do not even dally with the problems of other countries. Moreover Turkey may turn its face to the other side and be in interaction with Asian countries and others. There are a lot of chances for us and I am sure they are all better than the European Union. All we have to is to give up the EU and establish a new future which is full of peace.
