Censorship in Cinema

Considering their effects, there are some paramount tools between the means of communication . In all the arts, cinema is known as the most effective one. Goverments, who are aware of the effects of cinema, have always tried to control it.. It is well known that the biggest propoganda films have been made in Russia in the cold war period and this is not a coincidence. Thus, America ,who knows this power very well, did not let their soldiers watch the film " Walleys of the Wolves Irak". As it is known, cencorship is the state in which the films are controlled or limited by the authority. In Turkey, the adventure of the cinema started along with its best friend; censorship. Here are some of the films which are censored in Turkey: "The Street Walker( Adolf Körner 1942 )", "The Endless Road ( Duygu Sağıroğlu 1966 )", "The Bouncers ( Kayahan Arıkan 1967 )", "The Big Animosity ( Tunç Başaran 1969 )", "The Hope ( Yılmaz Güney 1970)". Many of these films were awarded in Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals but they were not shown in the country they were made in. I believe that the censorship in the motion pictures should be abolished.

Art should be free since it is the expression of feelings directly without any interference. I think the censorship in the Turkish Cinema should be abolished because it loses its charecteristic to be an art if it is censored. In Turkey, when producers, who have a good film, apply to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs for support, they put their canary among the cats. The producers, who do not make the proper changes in the films upon the expected requests of the ministry, lose the opportunity to get financial support. Moreover, even though the producers make the film with their own money, they are exposed to the limitations of the Censorship Commission. Furthermore, the censorship is easier when the producer and the director are not the same person. Since the producers financially contribute more to the film, they want to earn money in any case. So, the financial gain becomes more important and art turns into only something commercial.

Turkish Cinema does not only convert into just a trade, but it also becomes a jigsaw puzzle of the governments if the censorship is not abolished. Take, for example, the film " Revenge of the Snakes" which was banned by the Censorship Committee in 1962. The president of the period, Cemal Gürsel, who watched the preview of the film admired the film and he wanted it to be shown without any limitation. It is interestingly enough that the same film was made again by Şerif Gören in 1985 and it was censored due to the different reasons. Similarly, another film "Guardian of the Dawn", was censored because it was claimed that the film turned people against the military in the scenes of aircraft crashes. However, the commander of the airforces watched the film admiringly later and allowed it to be seen uncensored. As these two examples illustrate, men and institutions behave arbitrarily in the field of censorship and this causes the movies to be the recreational ground of the governments.

Film productions increase in the counries where there is a censorship and compulsion. So, the censorship should be abolished because it is useless and also triggers underground cinema and does not contribute to the country. People are limited to express themselves, they apply to the art inevitably. For example, Iranian Cinema showed an increase of 120 percent last year. It is interesting that the dictatorial regime in Iran made a major conribution to the its cinema.Another example is from the USA. Although the film "Fight Club" was censored in America, the film has been watched by millions of people and became one of the best films of American films history. Prohibition brings illegality. If the films are censored, films go to underground; that is, people go to underground.

Some people who are against the abolition of cinema censorship may claim that the cinema should be controlled because of moral values. However cinema is an art that is preferred so people do not have to watch it. Although shots and captions like portrayal of crime or suicide, display of dangerous weapons, overpassionate love making, nudity and indecent exposure are sometimes exaggarated in the cinema, it is the problem of people who want to watch them. It should not be a problem of goverment. Furthermore, these exaggarations can sometimes be the need of the director or the scenarist. So, they should be free since the art should not be restricted.

Cinema’s associations with youth, sexuality, and expression have often made it a target for government control. In many cases censorship violates freedom and it also causes statesmans to behave arbitrarily. Turkish government is trying to make copyright law proper for EU norms in these days. In my opinion, the government should also examine the subject of censorship in detail. It is time to look into the role that can be played by criticism, analysis, and cinema literacy rather than relying on a Censor Board that acts as a moral police. There might be a flood of grade without censorship.

"...different reasons" çok basit kaçmış,konuyu gayet uygun kelimelerle açarken "different reasons" diyerek basitleştirmişsin. en azından "...political reasons" ya da "...ideological reasons" deseydin temanın dışına çıkmadan olayı hallederdin.
